At Sacred Heart, we are delighted to have our own full time dedicated sports coach.

We believe its important that our children have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of sports so they can improve their fitness, discover what they are good at, and gain confidence by finding something they really enjoy – whatever their ability.

We deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum which aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.

There are numerous opportunities for our children to represent our school and compete in a variety of sports including football, cross country and netball. In the last year we have been victorious in the following as part of the Wharfe Valley Primary Schools League:

Boys Football Europa Trophy

Girls Football Europa Trophy

Hockey

Kwik Cricket

Rounders

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Our children enjoy weekly circuit training in KS2, Wake-up Shake-up in KS1 and Jungle Journey in EYFS. As well as this we focus on specific sports on a half termly basis.

The Daily Mile and daily active challenges

Our children love the daily mile! Its a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can walk to catch their breath if necessary – the aim is improvement and achievement, and enjoyment.

Class Teachers have noted how ready the children are to carry on learning after completing the Daily Mile and the children have expressed how much they enjoy doing it!

After school sports

We are pleased to provide a number of after-school sports clubs including dodgeball, multi sports, netball and football.

Swimming

“Learning about water safety and knowing how to keep yourself safe in and around water is a life-skill and as such, should be recognised and measured in the same ways as other key subjects such as maths. Including a condition that ensures swimming and water safety attainment is published will help to show how we can support schools to deliver these vital lessons.” Steve Parry Chairman of Curriculum Swimming.

National Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

The Daily Mile

The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health and well-being of our children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.

The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes.

Some children have chosen to record the time that it takes them to complete a mile. The results will be collected and analysed to see what impact the Daily Mile is having on the children’s fitness. Class Teachers have already said how ready the children are to carry on learning after completing the Daily Mile and the children have expressed how much they enjoy doing it!

Primary School’s Sports Funding

Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.

What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year for the next two years – that will mean around £8,600 a year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Recently the government have committed to funding the primary school Sports Premium up until 2020 – an investment worth £750 million.

Purpose of the Funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses of the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits
