School Sports
At Sacred Heart, we believe it’s essential for our children to have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports. This helps our children improve their fitness, discover their strengths, and build confidence by finding activities they truly enjoy regardless of ability.
Our specialist coach provides 2 hours a week of high quality PE. Our coach knows the children very well. This in combination of consistently using the same coach ensures our children's sporting abilities are accurate assessed and they are able to make excellent progress. As a result, our children are highly accomplished in sports' performance.
Representing the school
Competitive sport is important and we take an inclusive approach to sporting competitions. Our children have plenty of opportunities to represent the school and compete. They learn the valuable skills of sportmanship and are able to put the tactics they learn in PE lessons into practice.
We take part in the Wharfe Valley Primary Schools League, which includes competitions in girls' football, boys' football, tag rugby, cross-country, kwik cricket, hockey and rounders.
Our aim is for all children to find at least one sport they enjoy that they can continue to pursue as they move to high school.
Over the last couple of years, we have been victorious in the following:
Tag Rugby
Boys Football Europa Trophy
Girls Football Europa Trophy
Hockey
Kwik Cricket
Rounders
Swimming
As part of the National Curriculum, our Year 5 children have a swimming lesson once a week at Ilkley Pool and Lido from February through to June. The aim is to ensure that pupils can swim competently over at least 25m, use various strokes and perform safe self-rescue in water.
Other Events
Our Year 6 children take part in the Brownlee Foundation's mini-triathlon event each year. This is fun way to introduce them to the sports and the children take part in a swim, cycle and run.
We attend a coaching session at the Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club. The children also get to see a professional tennis match as part of the Lexus Ilkley Open Tennis Tournament. professionals
We regularly have fun runs events in school such as 'Race for Life' and 'Elf Run' to raise money for charities such as Simon on the Streets and Cancer Research.
Dance and Drama
Each half-term, a different class is lucky enough to receive coaching from a Dance and Drama specialist. This culminates in a performance to parents.
There is also a dance and drama after-school club for our budding performing arts stars of the future.er Events
